Veranda
An unexpected peppery basil syrup brings the wheat whiskey home in this memorable drink.

Created for Wigle by Craig Mrusek, aka Dr. Bamboo, bartender at Verde

An unexpected peppery basil syrup brings the wheat whiskey home in this

memorable drink.

1.5 oz Wigle White Wheat Whiskey

1 oz black pepper & basil syrup

.5 oz lemon juice

Basil & Black pepper syrup

1.5 cups Demerera sugar (available in most grocery stores near the

“regular” sugar. Domino is one of the brands that makes it.)

1 cup water

12-14 fresh basil leaves, torn

2 teaspoons freshly-ground black pepper

Heat sugar, water, pepper and basil in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly until sugar is dissolved (it should only take a few minutes…do not boil). When sugar is dissolved, remove from heat and cover.

Let syrup sit for 1 hour, then strain out the pepper and basil (a fine mesh tea strainer works well). Bottle it and store in the refrigerator. Will keep for at least one month. Shake everything with ice and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a single basil leaf.
